Management of Lymphoedema

Lymphoedema is a chronic condition that results in swelling in the body – typically in the arms and legs as well as chest, breast and genital regions. Lymphoedema can be primary or secondary in nature. Primary lymphoedema is typically associated with inherited or genetic causes and secondary lymphoedema is acquired when there is damage, dysfunction or deficiency of the lymphatic system e.g. following a lymph node clearance or radiation treatment.

Lymphoedema is a progressive condition and often initially presents with limb swelling and heaviness. As the condition progresses, patients may experience changes to their skin condition, the presence of wounds as well as leakage of lymphatic fluid through the skin. Lymphoedema causes significant functional challenges associated with symptoms including difficulty with mobility and fine motor activities as well as challenges with tasks such as dressing and wearing regular clothing.

Lymphoedema is a condition that requires ongoing management to prevent disease progression and to optimise function. At Allied Therapy Network we are able to offer Complex Lymphoedema Therapy that aims to prevent disease progression, reduce oedema and maintain improvements through the use of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), bandaging, and garment prescription. We are also able to utilise adjunctive therapies to optimise your management including use of sequential intermittent pneumatic compression devices, customised exercise programs and skin care.
